DIAL H FOR HEALER

He played the world’s greatest hero but gave acting up to help others. John Haymes Newton (b.1965) graciously allowed the following interview to take place in between his busy schedule at Health Beyond Belief.

What geared you toward acting as a young man?

I did my first when I was in preschool, about the Apollo 11 moon landing. It was more improv than anything else, but I did theater also in high school, and caught the bug there. Moved to New York City when I was nineteen to study full time and pursued that. Did a lot of theater, mostly really small venues, but learned to exercise the techniques and finish the two-year program that was the Sanford Meisner study. That really is what got me into the world of acting. I feel that it was part of my journey in life, it’s not what I do now. If you go to HealthBeyondBelief.Com, you can see what my other work is—I help train doctors and therapists in outside-the-box techniques to support patients in their quality-of-life issues (addiction, chronic pain, stress, things like that), and also have a private practice. That’s what I feel my calling is, the acting was a step in that direction.

Generally speaking, what was working in American television like in the late 1980s?

Superboy was a syndicated show, sold to individual markets around the country and, of course, the world. It was my first TV series; I had already joined the Screen Actors Guild before that, and had worked, but that was my first launch into the world of acting. I really enjoyed the show, it was a great opportunity for me. Felt like a big responsibility to wear that suit, and I even wore Christopher Reeve’s suit to the audition, which was quite intimidating.

What series of events brought you to Superboy? What was the casting process like?

It involved me going to visit the studios in North Carolina while I was on vacation, and synchronistically the casting director, Lynn Stalmaster (1927–2021), happened to be there. This was my first audition after my two-year program in New York City had ended. It was for a movie called Weekend at Bernie’s (1989), that’s what he was there to cast, and after the audition Lynn said I did really well, and would I be interested in a TV series, so he had me read the Superboy material, and then flew me to Florida, I believe, for the screen test, and I ended up getting the job.

Did you have any concerns at the time, of being typecast into the role, as was the case with other superhero actors in decades past (Reeve, West, Ferrigno, etc.)?

Yes, I did have, not just because of superheroes in the past, but also just so many actors on TV who play such a distinct character tend to not move on beyond that. So that was a big concern of mine, and probably played into my decision to not go back for the third series pick-up. We
